Abstract
Both military and commercial institutions are moving rapidly toward systems that increase use of automation while dramatically decreasing the number of people performing the work. With more automation and fewer people, these systems will place more emphasis on human cognitive performance. Thus, these changes will require new organizational designs that are optimized for the cognitive role of humans. This paper discusses the Process for Redesign of Organizations (PRO) methodology and associated toolset that is being developed for aiding analysts in designing teams and optimizing the allocation of functions within these teams. The PRO methodology is based on extensions to the COGNET architecture to allow the modeling and measurement of organizational structures.
