Abstract
Research on what determines vigilance performance has been extensive; yet, few guidelines exist for the selection of persons who are best suited to perform vigilance tasks. The focus of the present pilot study was to determine if a subset of items from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) could be identified which would discriminate between soldiers who were able to sustain an adequate level of performance and soldiers whose performance deteriorated over time. Thirty-nine items produced chi-squares with p values less than .05. A discriminant analysis correctly classified 88.5% of the soldiers who maintained their performance rate and 83.9% of the soldiers whose performance degraded over time.
