Abstract
Anesthesia is a dynamic, complex world in which decisions must be made rapidly, often with partial information and uncertainty. Previous studies of anesthesiologists' responses to adverse events have demonstrated that even experienced anesthesiologists are not optimally prepared to manage crises. A new training course which is aimed at improving the crisis management skills of anesthesiologists is described. The course borrows concepts from “Cockpit Resource Management” training in aviation and uses lectures, videotapes, and realistic simulation with expert debriefing to teach “Anesthesia Crisis Resource Management.”
