Abstract
Safety in air travel is critically dependent on the work of personnel who inspect and repair aircraft. Catastrophic accidents have occurred as a result of failure to detect and repair aircraft malfunctions. It is imperative that we understand the factors that impact the performance of these people to support recommendations for any needed changes in training, communication methods, equipment and system design and work environments. This paper describes a program of research being conducted by the Office of Aviation Medicine of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), concerning the human factors of maintenance and inspection of civil aircraft.
