Macroergonomic Considerations in Determining Minimum safe Crew Size on Maritime Vessels

Abstract

As part of a National Research Council project, a study was undertaken to develop and initially validate a function analysis model for determining the minimum safe crew size of maritime vessels. During the validation phase, macroergonomic factors were identified which must be specified in using the model. These factors and their effects on manning are reviewed.
