Cost justification of selecting modular POS (Point Of Sale) terminals in many businesses is a challenge for many retailers. A research program was conducted in Europe to explore productivity and financial benefits of integrated and modular POS equipment for small supermarkets. Tests were conducted over an eighteen month period. The greatest improvement in front-end productivity was achieved with a modular POS scanning system. This equipment configuration increased the front-end workload capacity by 24%.
