Abstract
Aircraft boarding chairs, devices used to carry passengers who cannot walk onto airplanes, have been cited for safety problems. The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board retained the services of human factors specialists to examine aircraft boarding chairs. The objective was to develop a federal Advisory Standard aimed at improving aircraft boarding chair safety through better design and use. Boarding chairs were studied in a static state and while in use. This permitted a comprehensive evaluation of the physical features of the boarding chairs and the “human-machine” interactions.
