Abstract
An experiment was performed to assess the color names that native Americans use to describe colors that can be generated on a color CRT. Twenty-eight circular stimuli, whose chromaticities covered the CRT's chromatic gamut, were presented at two luminances and two angular subtenses. Subjects responded to each stimulus by typing a freely chosen color name into a computer terminal. The names were then studied to evaluate the effects of luminance, angular subtense, and practice.
