Abstract
The design of “normal” habitats permits considerable flexibility for those who design them and considerable freedom of action and movement for those who live in them. Such is not the case, however, for some settings where constraints are imposed on both designers and residents due to the total environment, as on Navy ships or in space, or due to the nature of the residents, as in correctional institutions or nursing homes. From a human factors perspective, are there any common design problems and solutions despite the obvious disparities between these settings? This panel session reviews human factors research in each of them.
