Abstract
The state of knowledge is reviewed concerning the likely impact on performance of 19 different stressors experienced in varying degrees by sonar operators at sea. The literature reflects major uncertainties concerning the effects on task performance of several stressors that the operators feel are particularly prevalent in the operating environment. Some of these stressors may be major determinants of system effectiveness; yet, the literature reflects few well established links between the stressors and task performance. Data on the effectiveness of countermeasures to the stressors reviewed are virtually non-existant.
