The documentation retrieval strategies and search patterns of well-trained users were compared to those of an expert. All participants were asked to solve a series of simulated “real-world” problems using a source document that contained a variety of reference aids. The results indicated that although the users were able to solve the problems as accurately as the expert, there were qualitative differences in their respective retrieval strategies.
