Abstract
A commercially available blink comparator was compared to manual inspection of the component side of electronic circuit packs. In addition, the comparison was made using both laboratory-trained and plant-experienced inspectors. There was a considerable difference in performance as a function of circuit pack area (size) and differences in pattern between blink and manual inspection and between laboratory and plant inspectors. Overall the blink inspection device was little better than manual inspection, except for one fault type, missing components, Plant inspectors were slower than laboratory inspectors, but they found more of the most difficult faults.
