Abstract
The relationship between the frequencies of different types of accidents and their rank order is modelled as a generalized power function. This paper presents empirical results validating the model for fatal accidents occurring in the home and for total accidents occurring in any environment. The notion of accident variety or diversity is also introduced and some variety measures are proposed and evaluated for 15 sets of accident statistics. Finally, some preliminary results are presented from an industrial safety survey.
