Abstract
This article defines a systems analysis procedure for office automation. The step-by-step procedure is stated in general terms for broad application and provides a basis for maximizing productivity by automating selected tasks. The organizational communication requirements were identified by use of a systematic task analysis and attitude survey. Man/machine trade studies were utilized to further define candidate tasks with potential for productivity improvement. A concept of operation documents the proposed usability of the system and provides a cost-effective mechanism for resolving design/user incompatibilities. Also discussed are the use of the system specification, hardware/software trade studies, and several implementation issues. This procedure is recommended to ensure that expensive office automation efforts are functionally responsive to the organizational needs and provide a usable man/machine system.
