Issue is taken with the absence of adequate scientific effort in the setting of national standards. Two German regulations concerning visual display terminals are discussed in particular to illustrate their implementation without appropriate scientific human factors justification. That is briefly contrasted to the scientific effort employed by industry aimed at providing products based on as thorough human factors evaluations as possible.
