Abstract
After recalling the 1973 IEA Symposium “ergonomics and standards”, the constitution and scope of ISO/TC 159 “ergonomics” are outlined. Some features of the work of this technical committee and of its sub-committees are commented: financial problems, scientific problems, ethical problems. Particular caution is suggested for producing standards related to optimal or permissible values of factors or effects in man-equipment-environment systems. At all events, ergonomics standards are not self-evident; their proper use requires an adequate understanding of ergonomical concepts, criteria and methods on the side of designers, producers, consumers, social partners and policy-makers.
