Abstract
The area of transportation, in its many different forms, is currently in the midst of a radical transformation that will likely have lasting impact on such things as the way we drive, fly, or even have packages delivered. Advances in computation, analytics, and automation provide promise for a bright and more convenient future, but that promise is not without peril particularly when considering the changing role of the human operator and the potential impact to the public and safety. In this panel, we will discuss some of the known human factors and human systems integration (HSI) issues that are common across multiple transportation domains as well as emerging issues that are beginning to surface as industry continues to push the boundaries and explore possibilities. Panel members will be from a diverse background and will provide unique perspectives into human factors and HSI concerns with respect to safety in the transportation domains related to unmanned aircraft, air traffic control, automation and driving, as well as the underlying systems engineering process.
