Abstract
Human factors and ergonomics practitioners frequently refer to design standards when developing requirements and evaluating the design of systems and products. Despite the heavy reliance on human factors and ergonomics standards, discussion of the processes behind the development of these documents is rare. This panel, composed of experts from aviation, health care, and defense, will discuss the impetus behind the development of three specific standards. They will share their experience as members of committees tasked with developing standards and will discuss how changes to their industries and technologies will affect the need for revised design standards.
