Abstract
A self-paced computer-based training (CBT) tool, designed by Klein Associates Inc. as proof of concept for their Cultural Lens model, was delivered to the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) (Hahn, Harris, & Klein, 2002). The model posits that interactions between members of multinational teams will improve if team members could see the world through each other's eyes. The training concept was based on interviews and observations of culturally-based cognitive differences and barriers to team performance at Stabilization Force (SFOR) headquarters in Bosnia-Herzegovina (B-H). A usability study was conducted by ARL at SFOR HQ to determine the tool's applicability for training cultural awareness and assessing its ability to improve multinational team performance. The proof of concept was found to be viable. Findings support refinement of the tool and development of additional CBT interventions designed to improve multinational mission effectiveness.
