Abstract
This paper describes an assessment of some aspects of a Brazilian standard that presents definitions and range of acceptable values to variables related to office chairs. Some of these variables, and the values assumed by them in a specific chair, affect directly the performance of the object, especially when ergonomics criteria are to be emphasized. This analysis is focused to the height of the seating surface, and it was based on a comparison among the standard accepted range of values for this variable, the prescriptions found in literature and data from Brazilian anthropometrical studies. A conclusion to this study points to some aspects of use of standards as a way to assure a required level of quality or ergonomic adequacy to industrial products, and the reliability of the certification process based on compliance to standards, as a pledge for such accomplishments.
