Abstract
After mentioning the necessity of standardization at large, this paper describes how human factors standardization, especially by ISO, and the advent of information technology are linked. Standardization and technological innovation coupled with industrial competition sometimes results in a precarious balance. Visual display standardization is the main topic of the paper; both the present as well as the future situation in this area is treated, mainly from an ISO viewpoint. Some observations are made about the necessary and interesting co-operation between physicists and human factors specialists in determining visual display requirements. The paper concludes with a view on the future of human factors standardization.
