Abstract
This paper presents a new framework for the design of ecological products. It argues for a stronger integration of person-centred and product-centred approaches in environmental psychology. The user-product system is considered a central concept to achieve improvements of ecological performance. We present examples of how mismatch analyses were carried out on several household appliances to identify ecological deficiencies within the user-product system. Design suggestions are derived from these analyses, followed by an empirical evaluation of the suggestions. Finally, the paper raises the issue of trading off ecological considerations against commercial requirements.
