Abstract
The most important challenge facing ergonomics is to reposition itself. We must move away from the view that ergonomics is the application of knowledge from others - be they psychologists, physiologists, engineers, sociologists. Ergonomics should be delineated quite clearly as a discipline in its own right, with fundamental and applied branches. This paper takes the interacting and interactive networks of modern life to be the domain of ergonomics, which has moved from studying the interactions between people and between people and artifacts in order to improve equipment, jobs and environments. Now we study interactions to design the interactive complexes themselves.
