Policemen (n=505) participated in a three-year program for promoting health and work ability. Principally, physical activity and fitness increased, cardiovascular risk factors decreased but the Work ability index (WAI) decreased and the work related stress symptoms increased. There were subjects whose WAI increased more than two points, and they had less stress and higher work satisfaction after the program.
