Abstract
Many companies have attempted to integrate ergonomics into their operations, but have failed to achieve the success they wanted. Often people don't realize that such a change does not happen suddenly, but usually occurs over a period of years. Most companies begin learning about ergonomics when an injury occurs. They follow a recognizable maturation process, becoming more effective in using ergonomics with each successive level. These levels of ergonomic maturity are easily identified through a supervisor or manager's verbal response to an injury. Recognizing the maturity level of the company can help the consultant (or company personnel) realize what needs to be done in order for the organization to mature and to utilize ergonomics more effectively.
