Abstract
International organizations of manufacturers and standardization organization are promoting the use of graphical symbols or pictograms to present instructional and product information including safety messages. To assure that comprehensible symbols are selected by these bodies designers and human factors specialists should cooperate in a fruitful way, respecting each other's skills and knowledge. It is argued that using the evaluation procedure described in the standard ISO 9186 ‘Procedures for the development end testing of public information symbols’ is an effective instrument for this cooperation.
