Abstract
This paper describes a study in which male and female participants in three age groups drove an instrumented vehicle on a 20mile (32.2km) route while information about their driving and following behavior was recorded. The drive included frequent following and stopping. Dependent measures of interest included following headway, range and range-rate, deceleration levels, and braking behavior. Following below a 1.0s headway occurred infrequently. Two modes of manual deceleration control based on initial inter-vehicle conditions prior to deceleration and brake covering behaviors are described.
