Abstract
This study examines to what extent professionals were able to predict accurately parents' responses to a questionnaire on the impact of the handicapped child. There were signficant differences between parents' and professionals' responses. When compared to parents' actual responses, professionals tended to overestimate the negative impact of the handicapped child on family relationships. They overestimated the extent to which parents reported community rejection and lack of support. They also underestimated parents' ability to use appropriate teaching and behavior management techniques in the home. The service needs of families of handicapped children are discussed in light of these findings.
