Abstract
Chronologically age appropriate recreation programs for severely handicapped youths and adults are a necessary component and facilitator of normalization. In order to help the severely handicapped learn to use their leisure time independently and appropriately, two categories of trainer intervention have been identified: programmatic adaptations and instructional techniques. Four types of adaptations are considered: material, procedural/rule, skill sequence, and adaptations of community facilities. The latter half of this paper presents a case study of systematic instruction, programmatic adaptations, and materials modification to teach a photography skill to a multiply handicapped adult woman.
