Abstract
The Van Dijk program has been developed, in part, to meet the prelanguage communication programming needs of deaf/blind individuals. This paper represents an interpretation of the Van Dijk procedures especially in regard to their applicability to other severe and profound handicapping conditions. The focus is on instructional interactive methods to be followed. A hypothetical assessment procedure is also suggested to aid a practitioner in locating appropriate communication levels and activities.
