Abstract
College student musicians face particular challenges in their occupation. However, few studies have been conducted with this population that identify students' needs and desires regarding potential treatment of physical playing-related injuries. This article addresses the results of an open-ended question posed in a survey of college music students at a large midwestern university. Students were asked, “What would you want from a health professional who might treat you for musicians' injuries?” This study found that college student musicians want to be active participants in the treatment process, and have concerns about upper extremity and back problems. Students feel that an understanding of their occupation is important for effective treatment, and identify themselves as a group with specialized treatment needs. Occupational therapists are prepared to address these concerns at entry-level; however, this and other health-care professions could also serve this population through specialization in treating musicians' injuries.
