This review was conducted to compare the results of carotid endarterectomy in a community hospital with those of the same surgery performed in larger medical centers.
In all, 166 carotid surgeries were performed over a nine-year period by the same surgeon. There were no operative or perioperative deaths. The operative stroke rate was 1.2%. No other significant complications were noted. Recurrence requiring a second surgery was noted in 1 patient.
These results compare favorably with those of larger institutions and support carotid endarterectomy in a smaller community hospital. ,
