Abstract
Intestinal necrosis has recently been reported in association with different angiographic procedures, eg, abdominal aortography, coronary angiography, etc. Two new cases of postangiography mesenteric infarction and a review of the literature are presented. This complication occurs owing mainly to thromboembolic phenomena, with "macroembolism" or "microembolism," and has a very high mortality rate. The key to an early diagnosis is a high index of suspicion in cases of persistent or recurrent abdominal pain following angiography The routine use of heparin during the angiographic procedure is still controversial but is indicated for high-risk patients.
