Abstract
An unusual case of effort thrombosis of the left subclavian vein, occurring in a fifteen-year-old girl who indulged in regular, vigorous horseriding, is pre sented. This is the youngest case reported in the world so far. The majority of patients are usually young men and the condition usually involves the right upper extremity.
Complete fibrosis of a segment of the subclavian vein where it crosses the first rib occurred as a result of repeated trauma to the vein from repeated, sudden, forceful muscular contractions of the shoulder girdle due to excessive and vigorous, almost daily horseriding over a fifteen-month period.
Claviculectomy of the medial half of the clavicle with resection of the nar rowed and thrombosed dilated segment and saphenous vein grafting gave an excellent result.
