Abstract
Small size is frequently cited as an indication for nonoperative management of aneurysms of the abdominal aorta, particularly in the poor-risk patient. The rationale for this approach is based upon the low risk of rupture in aneurysms of small size and the well-known relationship between tension in the vessel wall and pressure within the aneurysm described by Laplace's law. A case is pre sented here of spontaneous rupture of an abdominal aorta that is most appro priately described as ectatic, rather than aneurysmal. The diagnosis of rupture could not be made on computerized tomographic scan of the aneurysm but was confirmed at autopsy.
