Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation and the Mobin-Uddin Vena Cava Umbrella Filter in a Patient with a Hypercoagulable State

Abstract

The association of certain malignancies with a hypercoagulable state is well described. The occurrence of pulmonary emboli in this patient population is relatively common. The management is frequently complicated by recurrent emboli while on anticoagulation or by significant contraindications to anti coagulation. Mechanical interruption of the vena cava in these patients is poten tially life-saving. This report describes the case of a patient with an underlying hypercoagulable state in whom the insertion of a Mobin-Uddin vena caval um brella filter lead to clinically significant bleeding secondary to disseminated in travascular coagulation.
