Aneurysms of the extracranial carotid artery continue to be rare vascular lesions.2,4,6 Rhodes and associates collected only 19 cases during a 15-year experience at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
Recently, there have been many reports of successful resection and recon struction of carotid artery aneurysms. These resections have been carried out electively.2,3,4,6
There are only a few reports about emergency operations for ruptured or expanded aneurysms.5,7,9,11,12 A patient was recently managed at this institu tion for a ruptured carotid aneurysm, treated by excision and end-to-end anastomosis.
