Abstract
The treatment of acute thrombosis of the femoral and iliac veins consists of (1) venous thrombectomy, and (2) thrombolysis. The therapy aims at (1) preventing lethal pulmonary embolism, and (2) restoring venous bloodflow and preserving the valvular system to prevent a post-thrombotic syndrome.
The thrombectomy reduces the rate of embolism and post-thrombotic syndrome when compared to the spontaneous course or conservative treat ment. From a technical aspect, the method has developed into a routine operation. Early and late results in 80 patients, as well as intra- and postop erative complications, are discussed.
