Abstract
Whereas some scholars see canon formation as a form of ideological control, discussions surrounding the essential works of what may be considered the literary canon of the “New Latino” will also contribute positively to the construction of a Latino cultural identity. Clearer articulation of the Latino literary heritage cannot but increase pride within the Latino community itself, and will also contribute to greater familiarity and acceptance in mainstream American culture, education, and politics.
