Abstract
Counting and measurement scales often have natural origins that deserve respect in analysis. In other problems, we should feel free to shift or translate the origin or to rotate a periodic scale. Examples with environmental data focus on trends in time and seasonal cycles. Several small tips are bundled together on working with noncalendar years in Stata.
