Seventeen risk factors for working with infectious agents in the laboratory and animal
facility environment are identified and discussed. The risk factors are useful in
performing qualitative risk assessments to determine the biosafety level necessary to work
safely with an infectious agent or to initiate modifications to the practices and
procedures, equipment and facility requirements at each biosafety level.
