Abstract
As the percentage of adults aged 60 and above in the United States grows, the need for clinicians who can work effectively with older adults becomes increasingly vital. In this article, the case of a 77-year-old Caucasian woman diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and anorexia nervosa is presented. First, the author reviews research and treatments used with schizoaffective disorder and anorexia nervosa in older adults. A theoretical formulation is made using Bob Knight’s contextual, cohort-based, maturity, specific-challenge model as well as a cognitive-behavioral model. The article reviews the first 6 months of treatment with the client and presents a brief discussion of the challenges experienced while working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
