Abstract
Four national, refereed, special education assessment journals were examined for the years 1983-1988. The institutional affiliations of authors were used to produce two separate rankings of publishing productivity of faculties of colleges of education. Scoring System A awarded fractions of points based on number of authors, while System B awarded a full point to each affiliated institution, regardless of number of authors. Both systems identified different institutions than those identified in previous studies of educational administration and general special education journals. The researchers cautioned that the technique was a rough measure of productivity, that no consideration of quality was attempted, and that separate analyses should be conducted for each subdiscipline or area of interest for which a measure of productivity is desired.
