Abstract
Blue-collar workers (BCWs) play vital roles in various industries, but they often face unique challenges in their career development compared to white-collar workers. This study presents a comprehensive literature review of the determinants that influence career development outcomes among BCWs and the underlying theories that explain these influences. Following PRISMA guidelines, this review is based on literature that has been published in peer-reviewed journals between 2013 and 2024. Review of the 28 selected studies uncovered 76 determinants (e.g., age, job position, and family influence), and 27 underlying theories (e.g., human capital theory, career construction theory, and social cognitive career theory). This study presents classification frameworks for the determinants and theories, grouping them into three categories: personal, organizational, and external/environmental constructs. These findings contribute to the human resource development literature by offering researchers valuable insights for further studies and assisting practitioners in supporting the career development of this workforce.
