In the Netherlands, as in many other countries, the field of housing and care for the elderly is changing dramatically. The prolongation of independence, care to measure, upgraded housing, and substitution from residential care to various degrees of external care are key-concepts in innovative initiatives. This article shows what this actually means for the housing of older persons suffering from dementia and who are no longer able to live independently. An examination of various projects leads to the formulation of focal points for further research and discussion. Finally the similarities and differences with developments in the United States will be briefly discussed.
