Abstract
This autoethnographic piece served as the introduction of the panel on “cowboys and pirates” at the International Congress on Qualitative Inquiry (2018) to which many of these papers in part, and whole, were in response. The author charts a particular parallel between his interest in cowboys and pirates across different shores of land and sea with an emphasis on the queer performativity of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, and then a rejection of the romanticization of modern-day pirates and the effects of real malcontent.
