Abstract

The authors used clams data from Blue Cross and Blue Shield Michigan for a 3-year period to study usage of antihypertensive and antiplatelet agents. and statins, after carotid endarterectomy and compared it with results from the North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectormy Trial (NASCET). Prescription of drugs and use for a sustained 1- year period was exam ned. They found the statin prescription rate was 70%, 66%, and 73%6 for the 3 study years and the average sustained statin use was 38%. Use of antiplatelet medications (5%) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (19%) was aiso low. The authors concluded that statin use has ncreased after carotid endarterectomy compared with NASCET but remains below 40%.
