Abstract
Emissions from tufted carpets can best be described as air charged with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Detection of VOCs can be determined by smell, or they can be completely odourless. Our sense of smell is extremely acute, therefore, an individual's threshold levels for certain substances can be very low. Odour can be either agreeable or disagreeable, without having an obvious connec tion to its effects on health. As an example, some cheeses do not smell very agreeable, but they are perfectly edible; however, Lily of the Valley has a nice smell, but is poisonous if digested by the human species. Many such examples of this phenome non can be given.
