Abstract
Charcoal-containing cotton flannel is the inner layer of the M-82 per meable, chemical protective suit used in the Chinese army (PLA). A flame retardant consisting of decabromodiphenyl oxide, antimony oxide, and zinc borate is used for FR treatment of the fabrics. Partial replacement of antimony oxide by zinc borate in Caliban F/R P44 substantially maintains the fabric's flame retardancy, provides it glowing (smouldering) resistance, as well as keeps the cost down. The treated fabric's chemical protective properties, mechanical strength, and bonding strength of active charcoal powder to base cloth are scarcely impaired.
