Abstract

Tracing its origins to the study of print and later film, Yoshimi Shunya says Japanese media studies has emerged from several traditions, influenced by a history of modernization, occupation, and empire. In this interview, he traces the development of media studies in Japan and his thoughts on the state of the field today. The state of Japanese media studies is relevant to understanding the mediation of the tsunami and recent events in Japan.
